A Bridgehead is a militaristic term. It can be defined as :...a strong position secured by an army inside enemy territory from which to advance or attack. " In this analogy to the military term the FRS should think of the Bridgehead as:

A safe position inside the building from which to carry out fire fighting operations.

The Bridgehead should always be below the lowest floor of the building that is affected by the incident, be it smoke or fire.

Experiment and historic study suggests that leaving two clear floors below the lowest affected floor and the bridgehead will make for a relatively safe and secure initial bridgehead location.

An immediate problem occures when the extent of the fire is unknown or the fire developes and extends vertically. This can create a situation where the demarkation of the zones becomes dynamic and particularly difficult.
